ELTON’S GLASSES on Toronto Star’s Anti-Hit List

Yep a SHOCKER indeed! It might be about as dancefloor friendly as a catatonic foxtrot & filed under”songs to make robots cry, but I’m delighted to announce that
“Elton’s Glasses”
, made it to no.4 on the Toronto Star’s Anti-Hit List.

Says the editor, Mr John Sakamoto:

“Making the former’s tragically overplayed “Your Song” sound new again is no small accomplishment, but self-styled “bedroom producer and part-time genius” Phil RetroSpector has done just that by pairing it with the stately “Raising the Sail” from Philip Glass’s score to Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show. The result transforms the sentiment in Elton’s signature ballad from youthful certainty to something closer to the cautiousness born of experience.”

Suddenly, the bedroom of this wannabe recluse doesn’t seem so bad after all…

Thanks John… (p.s. thanks to Reg & Philip too)

ENDLESS YELLOW – Coldplay vs Lionel Richie & Diana Ross

Coldplay’s Yellow” + Endless Love” by Lionel Richie/Diana Ross

According to Chris Martin, “Yellow” is about being devoted to someone, wanting to do anything for them – writing a song for them, swimming across the sea for them and so on…. (all together now….awwwwww)

“Endless Love”, that schmaltzy duet by Lionel Richie & Diana Ross was from the 1981 film of the same name. The film, which was based on a best-selling novel of the same name, was not very successful, but the song received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and won a Marquee Award in 1982 for Best Original Song. It still brings a lump to my throat… (but that’s a whole other story…

RetroSpector’s ALTER-EGO

So I’ve been asked a couple of times lately what does this Wannabe Recluse & Bedroom Producer do in the real world. Truth is by day I’m a visual-artist called Marty Thornton & by night… (well you know the rest, I do experiments into the SOUND OF WALL) . So below are some samples of my artwork. Without blowing my own trumpet too much, they look even better in the flesh. Each is a large format Digital C-type print (120cm x 120cm) & all limited editions. Enjoy…
Should you require any further info about Marty Thornton you can contact him/me
(oh this duality gets so confusing!)

This boot was made as a tribute to the late Heath Ledger. It’s short & sweet but seems quite fitting in a way. I’ve had a few requests to post it so here it is…
